Peter Quinn’s “Banished Children of Eve”

As part of its series of events for young readers in New York , Commonweal Magazine has invited Peter Quinn—good friend of Commonweal, award-winning author and really fun guy to be around—to read from his novel of Civil War New York, ‘Banished Children of Eve’ to celebrate its 20th year in print (Peter will bring books for purchase).  It’s at Swift Hibernian Lounge, 34 E4th St., NYC, 7pm. And then Peter will hang out and share a drink; first round’s on Commonweal. So if you’re looking for useful writing tips, Bronx accents, original sin and local history, Swift is the place to be.

CATCHING UP WITH…TARA O'GRADY

So what’s new with Artists Without Walls’ member Tara O’Grady?

Tara in New Orleans
Tara in New Orleans

After a successful debut in the city of jazz, Tara is already working on her fourth album to be named after a New Orleans neighborhood – Irish Bayou. The Irish of New Orleans have embraced her as one of their own and asked her to write songs about their history in that unique city where she appeared on radio and television in March, and performed everywhere from the Irish Cultural Museum in the French Quarter to a float in the city’s St Patrick’s parade. Tulane university professor Dr. Laura Kelley has even included Tara in her soon to be published book about the Irish in New Orleans. The Irish Network has invited her back to perform November 8 for a gala commemorating the Irish who fled the famine and landed in the crescent city in the 1800s. If you’d like to attend the weekend and experience New Orleans from an Irish historical perspective, go to Irish Network New Orleans

unnamed-35Next stop? Tara plans to introduce herself to the Irish audiences in Boston. It won’t be too hard to find people there who like her swinging versions of “Danny Boy” and “Go Lassie Go.”  We can catch Tara locally every Tuesday at Winnie’s in the Refinery Hotel from 7:30-10:30pm @ 63 W. 38th and every Thursday–except this week, which is Wednesday–at LOCL in the NYLO Hotel LOCL in the NYLO Hotel from 8:30-11:30pm @ 77th & Broadway.
