NIAMH HYLAND at ROCKWOOD MUSIC HALL TONIGHT with SINGER/SONGWRITER ED ROMANOFF

As the audience was making its way to their seats at a recent AWoW Showcase, AWoW cofounder Niamh Hyland got everyone’s attention when she stepped on stage and, unannounced, belted out a few lines from “You Have No Idea Who I Am,” which opens Brendan Connellan’s comedy Pompa Pompa. Niamh co-starred in a New York City production of Connellan’s play earlier this year.

Niamh will be appearing with singer/songwriter Ed Romanoff tonight, Tuesday, August 20, at Rockwood Music Hall, 196 Allen Street, NYC, 7pm. Poet Liv Mammone will be joining Niamh and Ed as well.

DAZZLING TALENT at the ARTISTS WITHOUT WALLS’ SHOWCASE, 6/25/2013

“I thought this kind of free flowing music, spoken word, anything goes evening, went out years ago. Terrific night at the ‘Artists Without Wall Showcase’ at The Cell Theater in Chelsea.” Marion Stein, attendee at Tuesday night’s “Artists Without Walls’ Showcase at The Cell.”

Navid Kandelousi and Mehdi Darvishi
Navid Kandelousi and Mehdi Darvishi

Iranians Navid Kandeousi and Mehdi Darvishi began the evening with a rhythmic improvisation. Navid wrote the work for an ensemble but for this performance it was arranged for the “kamancheh,” played by Navid, and the “daf,” a percussion instrument and the most common instrument in Iran, played by Mehdi.  The work, calling on traditional Persian folk tunes, included complex passages and difficult bowing techniques, which were perfomred by Navid with dazzling results.  Mehdi’s accompaniment was perfect, calling upon subtle forces to transmit great energy. A dynamic opening to the evening.

Carl Capotorto, “Little Paulie” Germani in the Sopranos, expressed his gratitude to the group for allowing him a few moments to honor and remember his friend and colleague, James Gandolfini. “Thank you so much for allowing me the opportunity.  And I was delighted to read a few pages from my book for the wonderfully diverse and highly sophisticated audience. It’s great work that AWoW is doing!” And thank you to Carl for sharing this thoughts on the Soparanos and James Gandolfini, and for his witty reading from his memoir Twisted Head

Leni Stern Trio
Leni Stern Trio

The Leni Stern Trio, which includes bass player Mamadou Ba, percussionist Alioune Faye and jazz guitarist Leni Stern, has recently written a set of ten songs that are based on old traditional Senegalese rhythms, blended with sounds of blues and jazz from America.  The songs they played on Tuesday were from that project, one of them performed for the very first time in public.  The trio will soon be traveling to Senegal to record their next album with a group of local percussionists, but they can be heard next Tuesday night, July 2,10pm, at 55 Bar on Christopher Street in New York.  Commenting on the diverse mix of talent that was presented throughout the evening Leni said “I was especially moved by the two young poets, Koro and Ciara.  What spirit!”

Ciara Thompson
Ciara Thompson

Back from a trip to Ireland where she was awarded the Poetry Award at the prestigious Listowel Writer’s Week, Connie Roberts introduced the two young poets, Koro Koroye and Ciara Thompson. Connie, while a professor at Hofstra University, was instrumental in shaping the paths of each of these rising stars. Spoken word artist Koro Koroye, who has dazzled the Showcase audiences in the past, performed her poem “My Name,” with power and verve, while Ciara Thompson read five soulful poems, which reflected on her life and her experiences. Two great young talents.

Michele Cetera and Jack O'Connelll
Michele Cetera and Jack O’Connell

Michele Cetera and Jack O’Connell acted the closing scene of “Frankie and Johnny In The Clair DeLune. “ “What made this exercise very special was that it was the first time Michele had ever tried this off book,” Jack said.  “We practiced this scene many times outdoors in parks from Greenpoint to Central Park. Michele translated her personal life right into the shoes of her character “Frankie” with brilliant results.”  And, as always, Jack who played Johnny, was perfect in his role. Ray Lindie handled the music in this wonderful scene from Terrence McNally’s play.

Catahoula Cajun Band played rocking two steps and a sweet waltz, which enticed audience members to jump up and dance.  Catahoula is a New York-based group that plays Cajun dance music of Southern Louisiana. While all the band members hail from north of the Mason-Dixon line, their love of the rocking two-steps, sweet waltzes, and soulful blues of Acadiana inspired them to bring their Northern take on this Southern sound to the parks, streets, and subway platforms of New York. They delighted the audience with toe-tapping, infectious rhythms, perhaps inspiring a pop-up Louisiana dancehall on a street corner or two.  Great music.

Matt Keating
Matt Keating

Matt Keating ended the evening with a few of what TimeOut London calls his “beautiful and honest songs of substance and melancholy”.  His first song, “Maker of Carousels,” from his most recent album, Wrong Way Home (Sojourn Records) was a moving tribute written after Matt read an obituary about the man who designed the Bryant Park carousel.  Matt followed “Carousels” with some amusing banter about nitrous oxide abuse as he finished the evening with his Willie Nelson-esque ode to summer jobs and un-requited love, “Between Customers.”  Time ran out on the evening–it felt like we were just getting warmed up–and Matt left the crowd wanting more. You can hear this outstanding musician and his band playing these tunes and others on July 10th, 8pm, at The Living Room in New York City.

The next “Showcase at The Cell” will be held on July 31, 7pm. For more information on becoming a member click on “Membership” above or write to info@artistswithoutwalls.com

Kate McLeod
Kate McLeod

Best selling author Colin Broderick, whose highly anticipated book That’s That, a Random House publication that will be released in May, will also be on hand and reading a short excerpt from his book, a memoir, which details his growing up in Northern Ireland. His first book, Orangutan details his first twenty years living in Manhattan, drinking, working in construction and attempting to formulate his life as a writer.

And there will be more. Playwright Kate McLeod’s monologue, “The End of Time” will be performed by Hannah Dahm a vocal major at LaGuardia High School for the Arts here in NYC.  Hannah’s worked several times in session at The Actors Studio and read the lead in a new play that she helped to develop (also at The Actors Studio), Trinity.  Hannah’s also a writer, having won a New York city-wide playwriting contest through Stephen Sondheim’s Young Playwrights Institute.

Cherie Ann Turpin

Jim Rodgers, who has participated a number of Showcases, both as an actor and a reader, will be reading from his novel in progress, Long Night’s End; Professor Cherie Ann Turpin, who has extensively written and researched the African Diaspora, Gender and Sexuality Studies, and Multicultural American Literature, will be reading and discussing body image and how women see their own bodies, and poet Vince Nauheimer will be reading from his work while making his first appearance with AWoW.

And finally, we’ve learned that AWoW co-founder Niamh Hyland may have a surprise or two up her sleeve.

Join us for a great evening of entertainment, a glass of wine, and some of the nicest folks you’ll ever meet.

SPECTACULAR PERFORMANCES AT AWoW's SHOWCASE: LEHMAN COLLEGE, APRIL 25, 2013

“It was great to see AWoW in action once again doing what it does so beautifully — making great art accessible and connecting artists with each other and with new audiences.” That’s what filmmaker Barbara Rick said after the Artists Without Walls’ Showcase at Lehman College.

Billy Barrett
Billy Barrett

The lights dimmed at 7:15, followed by the slow tolling of a bell, a driving guitar and the crashing of drums. And to AC/DCs lyrics’ “I’m rolling thunder,” Billy Barrett walked onto the stage.

“The first thing you need to know is that I was raised by sociopaths,” and with those words a great evening of entertainment was set into motion. Billy’s upcoming memoir, Highway Star, smacks of unique storytelling genius.  He moves words around so that his stories pop off the page with a crispness and clarity. And there is no shortage of stage presence, which is sure to cause a stir in the literary community.  Billy and award winning, best-selling author Peter Quinn will soon begin editing Highway Star.

Danny Mixon, Antoinette Montague and Charles Hale
Danny Mixon, Antoinette Montague and Charles Hale

Jazz and blues vocalist Antoinette Montague and legendary jazz pianist Danny Mixon lit up the room with  some welcoming blues’ notes, “Let The Good Times Roll. “Noting that it was the “First Lady of Song” Ella Fitzgerald’s ninety-sixth birthday, Antoinette followed with  one of Ella’s big hits, “A Tisket A Tasket.”  Antoinette and Danny slowed the tempo with a soulful rendition of Billie Holiday’s “God Bless the Child” and a rarely heard tune “I’m a Little Blackbird,” popularized by Florence Mills. They ended with  a quick out, an “AWoW” blues theme.  You can hear this great duo at The Baha’i Center, 53 East 11th St, NYC, on May 14.

Marni Rice and Xio Evans
Marni Rice and Xio Evans

Marni Rice, chanteuse-accordionist and theater artist from New York City and Xio Evans, dancer choreographer from Costa Rica, co-wrote and performed a riveting work called  “Have You Seen My Son?” a performance piece about gun violence. The text is in Spanish and English and the performance is dedicated to the issue of social justice. If this duo comes your way you must see them. This act is stirring, compelling and timely. Brilliant.

Moley and Owen 'O Suilleabhain
Moley and Owen ‘O Suilleabhain

Owen and Moley O Suilleabhain, singers from Ireland, and Koro Koroye, a spoken word artist from Nigeria, performed together for the first time. Their performance explored the ancient traditions that they have inherited and how they have transformed this heritage into a voice they can truly call their own. Now living in the melting pot of New York City, they are sharing

Koro Koroye
Koro Koroye

the common experience of rediscovering their ancient identities with their own contemporary voices.  Their wonderful performance represents what Artists Without Walls intends, cultures coming together to create new and exciting works of art. This surely qualifies. A show stopping performance by three talented young performers.

Katherine O'Sullivan and Paul Nugent
Katherine O’Sullivan and Paul Nugent

Boys Swam Before Me, a play written by playwright and author Seamus Scanlon followed.  “Boys” centers on a son, Victor McGowan, who is surreptitiously visiting his mother, May McGowan, in a nursing home. The play, which included stellar performances by actors Paul Nugent and Katherine O’Sullivan, examines memory, loss and longing. Don Creedon masterfully directed this compelling work.

Annette Homann
Annette Homann

Violinist and fiddler Annette Homann combined her fascination with voice and violin in her original spring-feeling song “Permanently.”  She followed with a fiddle variation of the “Radetzky

March,” a work of the Austrian composer Johann Strauss Sr.  Annette called it “The German (speaking) Irish connection” combining the March with rhythmic marching patterns and Irish fiddle stylistics.  A very talented fiddler and a delight to watch

Salina Sias, accompanied by guitarist Thad DeBrock shared stories of her journey toward self-identity, acceptance of her Mexican roots while beautifully performing original numbers from her up and coming album, including a personal song she penned in Spanish.

Honor Finnegan and her guitarist Aviv Roth closed out the evening in rollicking fashion, singing two songs, “Life is Short” and “Internet Junkie from her CD, The Tiny Life,” as well as one of her newer pieces, which has been recorded by critically acclaimed singer-songwriter, Amy Speace. The Tiny Life was #9 on the Folk DJ Charts in February 2012, and Honor was

recently selected as a finalist in the prestigious New Folk Songwriting Contest as part of the Kerville Folk Festival in Kenville, Texas.  Honor combines a great (and big) voice with a witty, easy-going stage presence.

A fun evening packed with stellar performances.

One final note, a big thank you to the folks at Lehman College for hosting this event; the Studio Theater, the production crew and the staff are all top notch. And finally, to the people most responsible for putting on the show, Deirdre O’Boy and Joseph McElligott, a hearty, “You guys are the best.”

MULTICULTURALISM IS THE MAIN THEME OF TONIGHT'S AWoW SHOWCASE AT LEHMAN COLLEGE

Owen and Moley O Suilleabhain
Owen and Moley O Suilleabhain

Artists Without Walls was created to provide artists of all disciplines an opportunity to experiment with new ideas in front of a live audience; create an environment that fosters collaborative and creative effort and  promote members’ careers in the arts, whether they have already established themselves or are at the beginning of their artistic career. All of those objectives will be on display tonight when Lehman’s college’s City & Humanities Program, the CUNY Institute for Irish-American Studies and the CUNY Institute of Mexican Studies host an Artists Without Walls’ Showcase at Lehman College.

Among the evening’s performers:
